The Setup

A good read on computer setups. Like a good nerd I am constantly thinking about revamping my setup and how better to optimize my setup to maximize productivity.

Though as he says, that could just be cause I’m trying to avoid work.

Something about the incongruous nature of this photo, I love. Also my love for Mad Men, my man-crush on Don Draper and my love of my iPhone 4. Apple should take these photos and use them as quiet ads. One more at the link.

There’s a certain elegance to the iPad that I just don’t think any other manufacturer will ever be able to match.

Also, I love a good vacation day.

Gruber Takes On Google

Wow. There are some creepy, creepy quotes in here.

Now, who’s working on the dystopian novel where Google is secretly controlling the world behind our backs?

Why I Waited 8h for the iPhone 4

On Friday morning I got in line outside my local Apple Store at 5 in the morning. I don’t want to tell you how many hours I waited in line that day, but it was a lot. However, I walked out with an iPhone 4.

I’ve had a lot of people ask me why I did that. I don’t need it. My 3GS was functional, albeit a bit buggy lately. There are the famed antenna issues with the new iPhone (which I can reproduce, by the way, but which don’t cause any problems for me). And there are probably better ways I could have spent that money.

I did it because I wanted to. Because I was passionate about it, and it’s important, I think, to follow your passions. Gadgets and the like are something I do feel passionate about, about how they can make our lives better, easier and richer.

I think it’s important to follow your passions, and not to apologize for them, no matter what they may be. Maybe it’s great food, maybe it’s stamps, maybe it’s base jumping. But the more passionate things you do, the better you’ll feel.

So that’s why I waited in line for the iPhone 4 and what got me out of bed at 4:30 in the morning.

What would get you out of bed at 4:30 in the morning?

Infographic via MacStories on how much unlocked iPhones cost around the globe. Interestingly, Canada is one of the cheapest by a pretty big margin. Huh.

Where have I been?

Keen readers will notice a distinct drop-off in posts this week and a lack of follow-up to my Yoga Challenge.

I’d apologize for that, but I’ve been busy. So a quick update.

Yoga challenge has been going well. Did 3x easy last week, 3x this week may get a little tough. I’ve done 2 already, but the rest of the week gets very busy and I have plenty of distractions. Yesterday was StarCraft 2 release day, where I stayed up til 12:30 going through the campaign. Tonight I pick up a new pair of glasses (yay for Benefits!). Tomorrow I head out for my friend Adam’s birthday. And Friday…

iPhone 4.

Also I get to hang out with my awesome friend Lisa as well as Adam. Actually Lisa will be there Thursday as well, but Friday is really the Lisa Day. We’re going to hit the AGO and have a grand old time.

I’ve been absent this week because I’ve been caught up in the excitement, reading posts, news and reviews about the new iPhone, chatting with others about what to expect for the launch day, all that fun stuff. I always enjoy times like this. A friend at work today, after I lamented a bit on the cost of it all, reminded me you have to follow your passion, whatever that is. For me it’s gadgets, having new capabilities to do the things I love to do and to capture memories.

But one must not forget one’s goals, either. Despite the link I posted a while back, I’m not quite ready to live completely goal-less. But I think there is something to be said for living in the moment, and not putting too much focus on the future.

That being said, my weight was up a bit this week at the nutritionist’s. Not much, but enough. Back to yoga I will go!

So your luxury smartphone—literally, the best that money can buy—has a minor problem if you hold it a certain way. Okay then. Move your finger and go back to worrying about something important, like the oil-spill that has literally destroyed the entire Gulf of Mexico. Seriously? This is front page, half-hour-block-of-television important? Excuse me, but go fuck yourself. You don’t have to own this phone. Oh what, you would rather use the iPhone 4 than any other device? Then shut up about the antenna and continue to go about your every day life. This is, without a doubt, the most infuriating thing about the whole “Antennagate” situation.
Nick Wood of Smoking Apples, summarizing Antennagate better than I ever could.

Diacarta iPhone App

Absolutely beautiful, simple iPhone calendar app. Doesn’t have any sort of syncing, repeating events or any of the standard calendar stuff, but worth a download just because of how beautifully designed it is. $1.99.
